Debugger Guide

Debugging from the Operating System

To start a debugging session from the operating system, run a single- or multi-user Progress client session with the Debugger (-debug) startup parameter, as in the following example:

pro sports -debug

The Debugger startup parameter causes the Progress session to begin by running the Debugger in stand-alone mode. This makes the Debugger the point of entry for all application procedures you want to run. The Debugger begins by allowing you to set breakpoints before using the Debugger RUN command to execute the startup procedure (the default, prostart.p, or your own startup procedure. Also, Progress automatically sets a breakpoint on the first executable line of the startup procedure before you run it.

For example, to run a single-user debugging session from the operating system and start debugging the arrmenu.p procedure, you run this command:

pro sports -p arrmenu.p -debug

This command runs the Debugger in stand-alone mode, ready to execute and debug arrmenu.p (or any other procedures you choose). An automatic breakpoint is set on the first executable line of arrmenu.p.
