Working with Database Objects
The Data Dictionary interface allows you to quickly access the schema of a database object. As mentioned before, the schema consists of properties that define a database object or properties that establish an application default for a database object. A property, then, is an individual schema element. The paradigm of the Data Dictionary is to provide a simple interface that lets you quickly select an individual database object and bring up a dialog box that organizes and displays all the properties associated with that type of object. These dialog boxes are known as editors. For example, there is a field editor, an index editor, and so on.
Here is the basic procedure for accessing an editor:
- To work with tables, select the appropriate command from the Schema menu.
- Select an individual database object from the list. For fields and indexes, you select the correct table and then the correct field or index object.
- To work with fields and indexes, select the appropriate editor from the Schema menu and then choose the appropriate table from the list that appears.
- To work with sequences, select the sequence editor from the Schema menu.
- Choose the action you want to perform with the object from the commands listed at the bottom of the editor.
