Creating Popup Links

A popup link is a word or phrase in a help topic that immediately displays a second help topic in a popup window when you choose it. (For an example of how the user executes a popup link, see the "Hypertext Links" section in Overview of Help System Development.")

Follow these steps to create a popup link using MS-Word:

  1. Select the word, phrase, or graphic reference you want to use as a popup link.
  2. Choose Format Font.
  3. The Font dialog box appears.

  4. Select Single underline.
  5. Choose OK to close the Font dialog box.
  6. Move the cursor to the end of the underlined text. Be certain there is no space between the word and the cursor and be careful not to include the paragraph mark.
  7. Choose Format Font (again).
  8. The Font dialog box appears.

  9. Choose Hidden.
  10. Choose OK to close the Font dialog box.
  11. Enter the topic ID of the destination topic for the underlined word, phrase, or graphic reference.
  12. The text you enter should appear with a dotted underline, to indicate that it has the hidden formatting attribute.

NOTE: Do not use help topics with non-scrolling regions as destination topics for popup links. When you use a topic containing a non-scrolling region, the help engine displays only the non-scrolling region and nothing more.

In the example shown below, the phrase “popup link” (formatted as single underline text) is the popup link text. The text string “Destination_Topic_A” (formatted as hidden text) is the topic ID of the destination topic assigned to the popup link:

The following example shows a popup link created with a graphic reference. When the user clicks the mouse on the graphic, the help viewer displays the topic identified by the topic ID “Destination_Topic_A”:

When creating a pop-up link with a graphic that you have placed by reference, the entire reference-including the help statement and the curly braces-serves as the link text. (For information about referencing graphics in a help topic, see the "Placing Graphics By Reference" section .)
