Adding Hotspots to Graphics

Help viewers allow you to use graphic images that contain hotspots. A hotspot is a rectangular region that functions like a jump or a popup link. A graphic image that contains one or more hotspots is called a segmented hypergraphic.

You can add hotspots to a Windows bitmap (*.bmp) using the Windows Hotspot Editor (also known as the System Help Editor (SHED), \Program Files\Progress\bin\shed.exe. You can also use SHED to create segmented hypergraphics and to compress bitmap files. You can find more information about SHED in Using Hotspot Editor , the SHED help file, shed.hlp.

Follow these steps to add a hotspot using SHED:

  1. Run SHED.
  2. Choose File Open.
  3. The Open File dialog box appears.

  4. Enter the name of the bitmap file and choose OK.
  5. The bitmap appears on the screen.

  6. Click and drag the mouse pointer to draw a rectangular area on the bitmap.
  7. SHED automatically displays the region you have drawn with resize handles. Resize the region as necessary.

  8. Choose Edit Attributes.
  9. The Attributes dialog box appears.

  10. Enter the topic ID of the destination topic.
  11. Specify whether you want the region to function like a popup or a jump, or to run a macro.
  12. Specify the region border as visible or invisible.
  13. Choose File Save.
  14. SHED saves the bitmap as a segmented hypergraphics file (.shg).
