Adding a Field
The Progress/400 Data Dictionary allows you to add fields to existing DB2/400 files. You can then access that field through Progress applications or through AS/400 applications. Non-Progress applications ignore Progress features that you might include, such as validation expressions and help strings.
NOTE: You can change all of the attributes of a field in the Field Properties dialog box but only before you commit the file. Once you commit it, the Progress/400 Data Dictionary restricts what attributes you can change.Follow these steps to add a field:
- Choose the Field mode button in the Progress/400 Data Dictionary main window.
- Choose Modify schema.
- Select the table from the Tables list that will contain the new field.
- Choose the Create Field button. The following dialog box appears:
![]()
- Enter a name in the Field Name field. This is the name by which Progress recognizes this object, so it should follow Progress naming conventions. See the "Naming Conventions" section in Common Product Information."
- Press TAB and the AS/400 name is supplied for you based on the field name. For example, for a field named ncust-num, the AS/400 physical field name is NCUST_NUM.
If you do not want a default AS/400 field name, enter the information.
- Choose a data type. A default format is supplied based on the data type. You can change the default format. The format determines the size of character fields created in the physical file.
- Enter other information that you want to add to the definitions for the new field. Choose the Help button to access detailed information on all of the elements in the dialog box.
- Choose OK to return to the Progress/400 Data Dictionary.
You modified the data definitions in the server schema on the AS/400. Your server schema now contains definitions that are not reflected in the client schema holder until you synchronize it.
