Progress
Installation and Configuration Guide
Version 9
for Windows

Using the Uninstall Or Add/Remove Programs Utility

You can run the Uninstall utility (or use the Add/Remove Programs utility located in the Windows Control Panel) to automatically remove Progress from your system. Running the Uninstall or the Remove Program utility removes configuration information from the registry and prevents conflict with subsequent Progress installations.

CAUTION: When uninstalling, do not delete any of the following Microsoft system files: mfc40.dll, mfc42.dll, mfcans32.dll, msvcrt.dll, msvcrt20.dll, msvcrt40.dll, olepro32.dll. These system files are common to other applications, and deleting them might adversely affect the operation of the other applications that use them. To avoid deleting these system files while running the Uninstall utility, answer NO to the prompts at the end of the uninstall process.

Follow these steps to run the Uninstall utility:

  1. Log in under the same domain and user name you used when you installed Progress.
  2. Make sure that Progress is not running in an open DOS window (or that the current directory is not in any Progress-related file or directory).
  3. Stop all Progress processes and close all Progress Help files. You can use the Task Manager to ensure that you stop all processes and close all help files.
  4. Using the Progress Explorer, shut down all Progress services (brokers, NameServers, and databases).
  5. Shut down the AdminServer by following these steps:
    1. From the desktop, select StartSettingsControl PanelServices.
    2. Highlight the AdminService for Progress 9.1E, and choose Stop.
    3. Choose Yes to confirm that you want to stop the service.
    4. When the service stops (in approximately 30-60 seconds), choose Startup. The Service dialog box appears.
    5. Change the Startup from Automatic to Manual, and choose OK. (This step is necessary if you reboot your machine before completing the uninstall so that the AdminServer does not start up automatically.)
    6. NOTE: If these same services will be required for a new installation, be sure to note any configuration settings, agent parameters, etc.

  6. For WebSpeed product installations, make sure that all Progress services and your ISAPI or NSAPI Web server are shut down. For more information, see the “Installing WebSpeed” chapter in the WebSpeed Installation and Configuration Guide .
  7. Choose the Uninstall icon in the Progress Program Group.
  8. OR

From the desktop, select StartSettingsControl PanelAdd/Remove Programs. From the Install/Uninstall tab, select Progress and choose Add/Remove.

The Confirm File Deletion dialog box appears:

  9. Choose Yes. The Remove Programs From Your Computer dialog box appears:
  10. When the usage count on a shared system file reaches 0, a Shared File warning dialog box appears.

  11. Follow the instructions in the Shared File warning dialog box to either remove shared files or leave them on your system. Do not remove any of the following Microsoft system files, because their removal might affect other applications that share them: mcf40.dll, mfc42.dll, mfcans32.dll, msvcrt.dll, msvcrt20.dll, msvcrt40.dll, olepro32.dll.
  12. Choose OK when the deletion process is complete.
NOTE: If an installation terminates abnormally, you must remove the ProgressUninstall file before reinstalling. This file records the initial installation and appends additional installations to the file. You can locate the ProgressUninstall file in the Windows directory folder; for example, on a Windows NT machine the file ProgressUninstall9.1E is located in drive:\Winnt40 (where drive represents the drive on which you installed Progress).
