Deciding Which Installation Level To Use
You can install WebSpeed and other Progress products at three levels: Typical, Complete, and Custom. Progress Software Corporation recommends that you perform Typical or Complete Installations. With these methods, you get the components necessary for the products to operate correctly.
If you have limited space on your machines, you might try Custom Installations to reduce the size of the installation. Progress Software Corporation recommends that only expert users perform Custom Installations. If you perform a Custom Installation, make sure you install the components and subcomponents that rely on each other.
Typical Installation
A Typical Installation finds all the components of the product you are installing that are marked mandatory. It then installs only the mandatory subcomponents of those components. Components and subcomponents are marked mandatory if they are required for the product to work in the way most developers use it.
A Typical Installation might not give you all the pieces of the product that you need for your particular purpose. For example, a Typical Installation of ProVision Plus does not install a Development Server.
Complete Installation
A Complete Installation gives you all the components and subcomponents, that you are licensed to use, of the product you are installing. Because it includes the optional as well as mandatory components, a Complete Installation requires the most disk space on your system. A Complete Installation might give you pieces of the product that you do not need.
Custom Installation
You should only consider a Custom Installation when your system resources do not allow a Complete Installation. In a Custom Installation, expert users determine which pieces of the product are installed. Plan Custom Installations carefully and then test them.
A Custom Installation starts by selecting all the mandatory subcomponents of the mandatory components. From there, you can add other components and subcomponents you need. In some cases, you might be able to deselect some of the mandatory components and subcomponents. If you find you need components or subcomponents that you did not install, you can run the Add Component feature to add them.
See "Component Lists For WebSpeed Products," for a list of the components and subcomponents in the Progress products that you might use in a WebSpeed configuration. If you are installing other Progress products, see the “Progress Version 9 Typical and Complete Installation Components” appendix in the Progress Installation and Configuration Guide Version 9 for Windows for a complete list of Progress products and their components and subcomponents.
