Single Executable For DataServer For ORACLE On UNIX

In earlier versions of Progress, separate sets of executables (both client and sever) were required to access ORACLE data sources, depending on the ORACLE version (7.x or 8.x). In Progress Version 9.1 a single set of executables is used to access the supported versions of ORACLE (7.3 or later). Either a single client executable or a single server executable now dynamically locates and loads ORACLE shared libraries on those UNIX platforms where ORACLE supports shared libraries.

The single executable dynamically locates and loads the ORACLE shared libraries. This means there is no need to set the LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variable, and there is no need to create a softlink in /usr/lib that points to the shared objects. You must, however, specify the environment variable ORACLE_HOME by giving the pathname of the directory on your system where you installed ORACLE.

Table 3–1 lists descriptions of the client and host DataServer executables for Version 9.1.

Table 3–1: UNIX DataServer For ORACLE Executables
