Installation and Configuration Guide
Version 9
for Windows
Starting the Multi-user Server Or Broker
To run multi-user Progress as a Windows NT service, you can create a database entry within ProControl. When you create a database entry, ProControl automatically creates an entry in the registry, which enables Progress to run as a Windows NT service.
The Progress server process coordinates the database requests from all the users accessing a single database.
Follow these steps to create the ProControl database entry:
- Access the ProControl utility and start ProService (if it is not already started).
See the "Starting ProService" section for more information about how to use ProControl to start ProService.
- From the ProControl Main Window, choose Detail, then choose the Databases folder. The Databases folder appears:
![]()
- Choose Insert.
ProControl displays the Databases General folder:
![]()
- Enter information for the following boxes, then choose OK:
- Identifiers — Provides a unique name to identify the database. The name must be unique to the host. The identifier can be up to 30 characters long and can include spaces. Note that this corresponds to the Identifier that you supply with the PCCmd command.
- Executable Name — Specifies the
_mprosrv
Progress executable. (This is the default.)- Working Directory — Specifies the directory that the service uses, for example, to write before- and after-image files or logs. If you specify a directory other than the directory in which the database resides, you must specify the database’s absolute pathname in the Physical DB-Name field.
- Physical DB-Name — Specifies the database’s physical name. If you do not specify a pathname, ProControl appends the directory you specified in the Working Directory field.
- Browse — Specifies the database file and directory to use.
- Startup Parameters — Specifies the Progress server parameters that you want to apply to this database. If you want the database to be visible from a remote host, specify the Service Name (-
S
), Host Name (-H
), and Network Type (-N
) startup parameters for the database entry. If you want to activate after-imaging for this database, you must specify the After-image Filename (-a
) startup parameter.- AutoStart — Causes Progress to start the database service automatically when you start ProService. Additionally, if you want the database service to start when the host is booted, access Services from the Control Panel program group and double-click Progress Task Manager
ProService. In the Startup Type section of the Service dialog box, choose Automatic.
