Progress/400
Product Guide
Dumping DB2/400 Data Definitions
You use the Progress/400 Dump Data Definitions utility to dump definitions from DB2/400 database files. The utility dumps information stored in the server schema on the AS/400. You can choose whether the resulting data definitions file (.df) has a Progress or an AS/400 format.
Follow these steps to dump DB2/400 data definitions:
- Access the Progress/400 Data Dictionary.
- Choose Admin
Dump Data & Definitions
Data Definitions (
.df
). The following dialog box appears:
![]()
- Select the tables from which you want to dump data definitions.
- Activate the Progress or AS400 radio button to select a Progress or AS/400 format for the .df file:
- Progress format - Choose this format if you want to preserve only Progress information. This creates a standard .df file that you can then load into a Progress database or a DB2/400 database.
CAUTION: If dumping in AS/400 format, you can only load the file with the Progress/400 Data Dictionary.- AS/400 format - Choose this format if you want to preserve non-Progress information, such as DDS data type, field storage length, or AS/400 name. You cannot load a .df file with an AS/400 format into a standard Progress database. You cannot use the standard Progress load utility to load an AS/400 formatted .df file.
- Choose OK.
The following dialog box appears:
![]()
- Enter a name for the data definitions (.df) file or accept the default name.
- Choose OK.
When virtual files are dumped and reloaded into another server schema, they become physical files, not virtual files.
The server schema might contain only a subset of the DDS data definitions for your original DB2/400 files. The resulting .df file does not contain information regarding unsupported DDS definitions.
