Progress DataServers

Progress DataServers provide application developers a transparent interface to a wide range of non-Progress database management systems. To achieve the tightest possible integration between the Progress 4GL and the underlying database managers, Progress DataServers support both native database features, such as stored procedures, and Progress 4GL syntax. The result is the ability to develop Progress-based applications with database independence.

Progress DataServer for Microsoft SQL Server

The Progress DataServer for Microsoft® SQL Server provides connectivity to Microsoft SQL Server from Progress 4GL and WebSpeed® clients. The DataServer utilizes an ODBC Level 2 interface to connect to Microsoft SQL Server.

The DataServer for Microsoft SQL Server is available in two editions:

Progress DataServer for ODBC

The Progress DataServer for ODBC provides connectivity to Open Database Connectivity (ODBC)-compliant data sources from Progress 4GL and WebSpeed clients. Among these databases are DB2, Informix On-line, and Sybase.

Through an ODBC Level 2 interface, The Progress ODBC DataServer allows application developers to access multiple database management systems transparently and integrate these data sources across a variety of configurations.

The DataServer for ODBC is available in two editions:

Progress DataServer for ORACLE

The Progress DataServer for ORACLE allows the ADE and applications created with Progress in Windows to access ORACLE databases. The DataServer utilizes the native ORACLE Call Interface (OCI) to make connections to ORACLE databases. Either ORACLE SQLNet or Progress Client Networking can be used with the Progress DataServer for ORACLE.

Progress/400 DataServer

The Progress/400® DataServer provides transparent access to DB2/400 databases on AS/400 systems from Progress 4GL and web-based applications via the native AS/400™ machine interface (MI) layer. Support for AS/400-unique features, including data queues, data areas, and user spaces, allows Progress-based applications to interface easily with legacy AS/400 applications. By masking the difference between the DB2/400 and Progress databases, the Progress/400 DataServer also provides functionality, such as word indexing of records, beyond the capabilities of the DB2/400 database.

The Progress/400 DataServer provides support for remote clients on any Progress-supported platform. In addition, the Progress/400 Native 4GL Compiler offers the capability to compile and execute Progress 4GL code natively on the AS/400. This native 4GL-batch client can call to, or be called from, OS/400 High-Level Language (HLL) programs, providing tight integration with existing legacy applications. The Progress/400 DataServer also supports Progress AppServer and WebSpeed transactions on remote platforms.

DataDirect Connect ODBC Driver for SQL-89

The DataDirect Connect ODBC Driver for SQL-89 allows third-party front ends that utilize the ODBC interface (such as Microsoft Word or Excel) to access data within a Progress RDBMS through a SQL-89 compliant interface. The front-end application and ODBC Driver reside on Windows, but the data can be on any remote platform running the Progress RDBMS. This opens up the Progress database by allowing easy access from the wide range of personal productivity applications and decision-support tools available in Windows. The DataDirect Connect ODBC Driver for SQL-92 is included in the Progress RDBMS.
