Hypertext Links

Hypertext links connect help information in a nonlinear fashion, causing the help engine to display a related topic when the user selects the link. For detailed instructions on creating hypertext links, see the "Adding Hypertext Links" section in Creating Help Topic Files."

Figure 2–6 shows examples of two basic link types-jumps and popups. The following sections provide more detail on various types of links.

Figure 2–6: Hypertext Link Examples

Jumps

A jump appears with a solid underline in the help window. Jumps work like automatic cross-references; if you select a jump, the help engine immediately displays the linked help topic. In the Procedure Editor help file (Figure 2–6), the word “File” is single underlined, indicating that it is a jump. When you select it, the help engine displays the topic shown in Figure 2–7.

For more information about jumps, see the "Creating Jumps" section in Creating Help Topic Files."

Popups

A popup link appears with a dotted underline in the help window. If you select a popup link, text or a graphic displays in a popup help window overlaying the window containing the link. In the Procedure Editor help file, when you choose the text, “procedure files” (Figure 2–6), the help viewer displays a definition for procedure files in a popup window, as shown in Figure 2–8. To close the popup window, you click anywhere on the screen.
