Defining Your Application Using the WebClient Application Assembler

You use the WebClient Application Assembler to define how your application is installed and updated. The WebClient Application Assembler offers flexibility for deploying and managing your application. You can use the IntelliStream features to automatically download and update the front-end components of your application. Using IntelliStream, you can have an application installed and updated on an as-needed basis. You can also install and update your application using an external installer. If you want, you can also provide your end user with the option of updating an application or continuing to use an older but acceptable version of the installed application.

A WebClient application definition is contained in a WebClient project file (.wcp file) that represents the latest version of an application. After using the WebClient Application Assembler to define the WebClient application, you generate a set of deployment files for this latest version of your application. These generated deployment files are placed in a version-specific directory under an output directory you specify using the WebClient Application Assembler.

NOTE: The Progress WebClient Installation does not include any code from the Progress Application Development Environment (ADE), for example the adecomm code, ADM and ADM2 code, or any of the following Progress ActiveX controls: CSComboBox, CSSpin, PSTimer. If your application uses any of this code, you must package it into your application installation with the rest of your application code. For more information about adding the Progress ActiveX controls, see the "Options Tab" section.

Before you begin to assemble your application, you must decide whether you want to use the IntelliStream application install feature or an external installer for your WebClient application. For more information about the different options available, see Designing Your End User’s Experience."
