Installation and
Configuration Guide
Beginning the Installation
How you install WebSpeed depends on what products, components, and subcomponents you choose to install. You can tailor your installation so that only those products and components essential to your business operation are installed.
As you proceed through the installation, you will be asked to choose one of the following installation options:
Read the system requirements information in "Installation Requirements," before performing the installation.
Then follow these steps to begin installing WebSpeed:
- See your License Addendum for additional information that you need to complete the installation. The License Addendum includes the serial number and control number for your installation. It also provides volume information, the media-ID number, and the licensed Agent limit. Once you complete the installation process, keep the License Addendum in a secure area.
NOTE: Do not run other applications during the installation process.- If you have not done so already, read both the online and hard copy Release Notes for the installation. The Release Notes might replace or supplement the installation instructions in this book.
- Insert the installation CD into your CD-ROM drive. Choose Run, and type this command in the Run dialog box:
where drive is the name of your CD-ROM drive.
The Welcome dialog box appears:

- Choose Next to continue. The Serial & Control Numbers dialog box appears:

- Type in the nine-digit serial number and control numbers from your License Addendum . Note that the cursor advances to the next field automatically when you enter the right number of characters.
This information is not case sensitive. The installation process automatically converts all letters to uppercase.
You can specify more than one product to install. Type in the serial number and control codes for each product that is included in your License Addendum . Choose Accept.
The product name appears in the Product(s) to be installed panel.
- Once you have entered all the products you want to install, choose Next to continue.
The Before You Start dialog box appears:

- Before you continue with the installation, make sure that you know the following:
- Web Server type—You must know which type of Web server you have installed: Microsoft IIS, Netscape, or CGI-compatible. You choose which WebSpeed Messenger to install based on the kind of Web Server you have installed.
- Web Server Script directory—You must know the absolute pathname of the directory that your Web server uses to store scripts. The setup program must install the WebSpeed ISAPI and CGI Messenger executables into that directory. It installs the NSAPI Messenger script into install-path
\bin
.- Web Server Document Root directory—You must know the absolute pathname of the directory that your Web server uses to store static HTML files. The setup program can copy the WebSpeed static HTML files, such as documentation files and the files required by Workshop, into that directory. The static files reside in install-path
\webspeed
. Optionally, you can reconfigure your Web server by creating an additional document directory that points to where you installed the WebSpeed static files.- Language—You must decide which language you want WebSpeed to use when displaying messages and handling data.
- Deployment architecture—You must decide whether you want to install all WebSpeed components on one machine or distribute them across two or more machines.
- Choose the Next button. The Choose Destination And Working Path Directories dialog box appears:
CAUTION: Do not make your Progress working directory a subdirectory under the Progress installation path. If you uninstall Progress, the working directory is deleted along with the destination directory.- Enter your destination path or accept the default directory in which to install WebSpeed (
c:\Program Files\PROGRESS)
.CAUTION: If you have WebSpeed or Progress products installed, do not enter the pathname where these products reside. You must specify a different destination path for WebSpeed Version 3.1. This ensures that you do not overwrite any of your existing WebSpeed or Progress product directories and files.- Enter a working directory or accept the default (
C:\PROGRESS\WRK
). Your applications, databases, and log files reside in this directory. This directory also serves as the default working directory for WebSpeed Agents. If you want to add additional Progress products to the most recently installed version, the install program assumes that you are adding products to that install location.
- Choose Next to continue. The Setup Type dialog box appears:
![]()
- Choose the type of installation you want to perform—Typical, Complete, or Custom.
