Progress/400
Product Guide

Overview

Progress/400 allows you to use Progress applications to access data stored in a DB2/400 database on the AS/400. To do this, you must create a Progress environment on the AS/400. The Progress environment is where the data definitions for the DB2/400 database files will be stored in a format that Progress can read. These data definitions will be contained in a series of files whose names begin with P__. These files reside in the server schema contained in a single library, although your DB2/400 database files might be distributed across many libraries.

Other components that make up the Progress/400 environment are the client and its schema holder. Accessing DB2/400 database files through the DataServer involves migrating the data definitions into the Progress/400 environment on the AS/400 and creating a schema holder on the client with those same data definitions so that they can be read by Progress applications. The client component also includes the Progress/400 Data Dictionary tool that allows you to maintain DB2/400 data definitions from the Progress client. All of your development can be done in a single environment. However, you still have the option of maintaining the DB2/400 data definitions by means of DDS on the AS/400. Figure 3–1 shows the client and server components of the Progress/400 environment.
