WebSpeed Component Requirements On Windows

The WebSpeed Transaction Server and the WebSpeed Workshop is supported on Windows NT 4.0, 2000, and XP on Intel processors. On Windows 95, 98, or ME, you can only develop applications with WebSpeed Workshop.

Different WebSpeed components place different demands on your system resources. A workstation running the WebSpeed AppBuilder can operate efficiently with a slower processor than a machine running the WebSpeed Transaction Server can. The startup parameters that you set for a WebSpeed component can change the amount of RAM a machine needs.

Table 1–3 lists the minimum requirements for running a WebSpeed configuration on a Windows NT 4.0 network. The amount of RAM you need varies by configuration. This table lists only the minimum amount of RAM that you need for the operating system. Your configuration might need more RAM. See the "Disk Space Requirements" section for information about the amount of disk space needed for your installation.

When reading this table, look at the most resource-intensive component you plan to install on a particular machine. For example, a Complete Installation of the WebSpeed Workshop product installs the WebSpeed Development Server as well as the WebSpeed AppBuilder. Because of that, you need to install it on a machine that meets the requirements for the WebSpeed Development Server, rather than the WebSpeed AppBuilder.

Table 1–3: WebSpeed Component Requirements For Windows
Component
Windows System Requirements
WebSpeed AppBuilder
  • Windows 95, 98, NT 4.0, XP, ME, 2000 operating system.
  • A Pentium PC (or compatible computer) with a clock speed of at least 100 MHZ.
  • 128 MB of RAM.
WebSpeed Messenger
  • Windows NT 4.0 (Workstation or Server) with Service Pack 6a1 or later, Windows XP, Windows 2000.
  • A Pentium PC (or compatible computer) with a clock speed of at least 100 MHZ.
  • 128MB of RAM.
WebSpeed Transaction Server

  • Windows NT 4.0 (Workstation or Server) with Service Pack 6a1 or later, Windows XP, Windows 2000.
  • A Pentium PC (or compatible computer) with a recommended clock speed of at least 200 MHZ.
  • 128MB of RAM (256MB recommended). Memory requirements vary depending on the number of WebSpeed Agents you are running.
ProVision Plus Development Server
  • Windows NT 4.0 (Workstation or Server) with Service Pack 6a1 or later, Windows XP, Windows 2000.
  • A Pentium PC (or compatible computer) with a recommended clock speed of at least 200 MHZ.
  • 128 MB of RAM (256 MB recommended). Memory requirements vary depending on the number of WebSpeed Agents you are running.
NameServer
  • Windows NT 4.0 (Workstation or Server) with Service Pack 6a1 or later, Windows XP, Windows 2000.
  • A Pentium PC (or compatible computer) with a recommended clock speed of at least 200 MHZ.
  • 128 MB of RAM (256MB recommended). Memory requirements vary depending on the number of WebSpeed Agents you are running.
  1. You can download the required service pack from www.microsoft.com.

Table 1–3 lists the necessary components of a WebSpeed configuration. If you are adding other Progress products to your system, such as the Progress Database or a DataServer, see the “Installation Requirements” chapter in the Progress Installation and Configuration Guide Version 9 for Windows .

WebSpeed can access a variety of databases through the Progress DataServer architecture. There are native DataServers for accessing the ORACLE RDBMS and DB2/400 data on AS/400 systems. The Progress DataServer for ODBC allows applications to access DB2 data on MVS, NT, RS6000, Informix OnLine, Microsoft Access, Microsoft SQL Server, and SYBASE.

Disk Space Requirements

Table 1–4 lists the Progress products commonly used in WebSpeed configurations and the approximate disk space that each requires. Computations are based upon a 32KB disk cluster size and a complete installation that includes support for one installed language. Actual space requirements can vary, depending on the block size of your machine. If you are adding other Progress products to your system, such as the Progress Database or a DataServer, see the “Installation Requirements” chapter in the Progress Installation and Configuration Guide Version 9 for Windows .

Additionally, some products share common files. If you install several products on your machine, the installation might not require the sum of the values listed in Table 1–4 for each product.

NOTE: During installation, WebSpeed adds files to the Windows directory. Make sure that you have sufficient disk space on the drive where Windows NT is installed.
