Product Update Bulletin

Administration

Progress Version 9.1 includes the following changes:

Progress Explorer Tool

The Progress Explorer tool, the graphical user interface that provides an easy way for you to manage Progress servers, is now a snap-in for the Microsoft Management Console (MMC). MMC is a general-purpose framework used for hosting system and network administration tools developed by Microsoft for the Windows platforms. When you launch Progress Explorer, you are actually launching an instance of MMC that has been preconfigured by Progress to contain the Progress Explorer snap-in. Much of the functionality available to you through the Progress Explorer tool is provided by MMC. For more information about MMC, see the MMC online help. For more information about the Progress Explorer tool, see:

Manual:
"Feature Comparisons," in this bulletin.

New Memory-mapped Procedure Library Format

In addition to creating standard procedure libraries, the PROLIB utility now allows you to generate memory-mapped procedure libraries from standard procedure libraries. With standard procedure libraries, each client accesses and executes a run-time instance of r-code segments in local memory. Memory-mapped procedure libraries allow multiple clients on a single system to access and execute the same r-code segments in shared memory.

The following changes were made to the PROLIB utility to support memory-mapped procedure libraries:

New Progress Initialization File Options

You can now define the following options in the Progress initialization file:

New and Obsolete Startup Parameters

Table 1–2 lists startup parameters that are new as of Version 9.1.

Table 1–2: New Startup Parameters Since Version 9.0
New Parameter
Syntax
Purpose
Async Queue Size
–asyncqueuesize n
Specifies the total number of bytes allowed for asynchronous request buffers allocated for a client.
Debug Alert Box
–debugalert
Adds a Help button to alert boxes that allows a user to obtain a stack trace.
Initial Value Segment No Convert
–isnoconv
Disables a code page conversion. Use if the conversion garbles preconverted international characters or causes the text segment to grow too large.
Fractional Separator
–numdec numeric–value
Changes the character that represents a number’s decimal point in formatted text.
Thousands Separator
–numsep numeric–value
Changes the character that represents a number’s thousands separator in formatted text.
Reread Nolock
–rereadnolock
Directs Progress to reread the record from the database, even if the record is already in a buffer.
Four Digit Year Default
–yr4def
Outputs a four-digit year from EXPORT, MESSAGE and PUT UNFORMATTED statements that might use a two-digit year.

Manual:

Table 1–3 lists startup parameters that are obsolete as of Version 9.1.

Table 1–3: Obsolete Startup Parameters As Of Version 9.1
Obsolete Parameter
Syntax
Purpose
Character Set
–charset
Identifies the code page that Progress uses in memory.
Cyclic Redundancy
–crc
Specifies using Cyclic Redundancy Checking to ensure integrity between the database schema and compiled code.
Distributed Transaction Manager
–decdtm
Allows two-phase commit on a VMS system.
Heap Size
–hs
Specifies the heap space on System V UNIX machines that use shared memory.
Network Version
–Nv
Specifies the version number of the connection protocol.
Page Writer Queue Delay
–pwqdelay
Determines how often the asynchronous page writer (APW) scans the page writer queue.
Page Writer Queue Minimum
–pwqmin
Determines the minimum number of buffers required on the page writer queue before the APW writes them to disk
Page Writer Scan
–pwscan
Determines the the number of buffers that an APW scans during a buffer scan cycle.
Page Writer Scan Delay
–pwsdelay
Determines the number of seconds delay between each APW scan of the buffers
Page Writer Maximum Buffers
–pwwmax
Determines the maximum number of modified buffers to write to disk during a buffer scan cycle
Stream
–stream
Specifies the code page for stream I/O.
SYBASE
–SYBt
Sets the time of a SYBASE client time out in seconds.
Time Stamp
–tstamp
Uses time stamp information rather than cyclic redundancy (CRC) to enforce consistency between r-code and a schema
Video Write
–vw
Allows direct video write compatibility when running Progress from a PC.
Extended Alphabet Support
–xc
Specifies the collation table within the convmap.cp file.
