Working with Database Objects

The Data Dictionary interface allows you to quickly access the schema of a database object. As mentioned before, the schema consists of properties that define a database object or properties that establish an application default for a database object. A property, then, is an individual schema element. The paradigm of the Data Dictionary is to provide a simple interface that lets you quickly select an individual database object and bring up a dialog box that organizes and displays all the properties associated with that type of object. These dialog boxes are known as editors. For example, there is a field editor, an index editor, and so on.

Here is the basic procedure for accessing an editor:

  1. To work with tables, select the appropriate command from the Schema menu.
  2. Select an individual database object from the list. For fields and indexes, you select the correct table and then the correct field or index object.
  3. To work with fields and indexes, select the appropriate editor from the Schema menu and then choose the appropriate table from the list that appears.
  4. To work with sequences, select the sequence editor from the Schema menu.
  5. Choose the action you want to perform with the object from the commands listed at the bottom of the editor.
