Tools for Creating Graphics

There are many tools that you can use to create graphics files for a help system. Many help authors use the graphics editing tool that Microsoft ships with Windows (Paint) for creating Windows bitmaps. You can create multiple-resolution bitmaps with the Microsoft Multiple-Resolution Bitmap Compiler (MRBC), and use the Windows Hotspot Editor (also known as the System Help Editor utility or shed.exe) to create segmented hypergraphics. (For more information, see the "Adding Hotspots to Graphics" section .)

As a sound design practice, you should create graphics for display on the most basic computer monitors with which your users are working. For example, images that you design for monitors with higher resolutions (such as super VGAs) might not appear the same on lower resolution monitors (such as VGAs). Certain colors do not translate to visible gray scales on some monochrome monitors. Plan for the most limited environment, and whenever possible, test images on the monitor type of your user base.
