Progress
Version 9
Product Update Bulletin
Progress Explorer Tool
The Progress Explorer Tool has been enhanced to incorporate the following updates being made for Progress Version 9.1D:
- A Register with NameServer check box that allows you the option of choosing a controlling NameServer to work with the Progress AppServer, the AppServer Internet Adapter (AIA), the Progress SonicMQ Adapter, the WebSpeed Transaction Server, WebSpeed Messengers, or the Progress DataServers. Prior to Version 9.1D, these Progress components were required to register with a NameServer.
Depending on the way you configure and use the Progress product, you can make the decision about whether to specify a controlling NameServer to handle client connection requests. For example, your configuration might be simple and not require the location transparency the NameServer provides, or it might be more complex and, therefore, dependent on this and other NameServer features.
If you choose not to register an AppServer Internet Adapter with a NameServer, then the AIA will be directly connected to an AppServer client and you will need to specify the host location and port of that AppServer client. Likewise, if you choose not to register a WebSpeed Messenger with the NameServer, then the Messenger will be directly connected to a WebSpeed Transaction Server, and you will need to specify the host location and port of that WebSpeed Transaction Server.
- Enhanced AdminServer security, such as:
- User authentication and user authorization that the system administrator can optionally enable during the installation of Progress. This increased level of security is apparent in the Progress Explorer when you log on and again when you attempt the required connection to an AdminServer.
- Improved AdminServer log details, which allow you to see more descriptive information when a login to the Progress Explorer or a connection to the AdminServer fails. The log also contains details about AdminServer login and connection success; you can choose to limit the logging of this success information by using the new
DLogLevelSecurity
AdminServer command-line option if you are concerned about log size. For more information about this option, see:
Manual: The "AdminServer Logging Enhancement" section in "Administration."- A check box in the SonicMQ Adapter General properties that allows you to start an Adapter instance automatically when the AdminServer starts. There is also a new Pool Range property in the SonicMQ Adapter Server properties that you use to specify settings for the number of threads within a SonicMQ Adapter broker process: Initial number of threads to start (the default is 20), Minimum threads (the default is 10), and Maximum threads (the default is 30).
- If you are running Fathom for Management Standard Edition, you also see some Fathom-specific fields in the Progress Explorer Tool. For example, when you set database configuration properties, you can choose whether to start the database monitoring agent automatically when the database starts.
- The WebSpeed Transaction Server, AppServer, and SonicMQ Adapter broker configurations now contain user name and password combinations. If your system administrator has established that you must enter your username and password to perform AdminServer operations, you must provide them in order to start, stop, or otherwise work with the AdminServer.
For more information, see the Progress Explorer Tool online help.
In Progress Version 9.1D, the Progress Explorer tool, is now a snap-in for the Microsoft Management Console (MMC). The Progress Explorer tool runs on the Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2000, and Windows NT platforms.
The following additional Progress Explorer tool enhancements are included in the 9.1C release:
- A new user interface within the MMC framework.
- Online, context-sensitive HTML help.
- Simultaneous connection to multiple AdminServers. This capability is important if you have Progress server products installed on more than one system. By supporting multiple AdminServers, Progress Explorer allows you to manage the Progress servers on each system through a single interface.
- The ability to view log files that record data specific to a server product or an instance. For example, a separate log file is created for each database; and each WebSpeed and AppServer broker instance has both a server log file and a broker log file. Additionally, the AdminServer has a log file named admserv.log that records status and error messages.
