The Schema Holder

A schema holder is a standard Progress database residing on the remote client that contains schema definitions for one or more non-Progress databases. The schema of a database is a description of its structure, the files, the fields within the files, the indexes, and so forth. The Progress/400 DataServer uses the schema holder to map the data definitions in the server schema to a format that Progress can understand.

Before a Progress client can access DB2/400 data, you must create a schema holder. The process is slightly different depending on whether you are accessing existing DB2/400 database files or moving a Progress database to the AS/400. See "Creating the Progress/400 Environment," for information on building a schema holder. The process is similar for both scenarios, but there are minor differences in the way the DataServer loads schema information into the client schema holder.
