Placing Graphics By Reference
You include graphics in help files using a method called placement by reference. This allows you to specify the filename and alignment of the graphic in a help topic, as opposed to embedding the graphic directly in the topic. The compiler then builds the actual graphic image into the finished help file. The example below references the graphic file,

Figure 3–6 shows how the same line of text appears with the graphic displayed:

Although you can only view the graphic after the help file is compiled, placement by reference lets you include a given graphic as often as you want without substantially increasing the size of the help file.
Help supports three techniques for placing graphics by reference. You can place the graphic:
For each technique, use the appropriate help statement followed by the graphic filename enclosed in curly braces ({ }). Table 3–3 lists the help statements used for placing graphics.
Table 3–3: Help Statements for Placing Graphics Graphic Location in Text Help Statement Syntax Treated as a character {bmc filename} Left margin {bml filename} Right margin {bmr filename}
NOTE: When using the placement by reference technique, do not include the graphic’s pathname in the graphic placement command. By default, the help compiler expects all graphics to be in the same directory as the help topic file. The full pathname of each graphic that is not stored in the help topic file’s directory must be included in the [BITMAPS] section of the help project file. For more information, see the "[BITMAPS] Section" section in Creating Help Topic Files."The following sections demonstrate each graphic placement technique.
Placing a Graphic as a Character in a Line of Text
Help text can precede or follow the graphic on the same line, as shown in the following example, but it does not automatically wrap around the graphic:

Placing a Graphic Along the Left Margin
Help text automatically wraps around the right side of the image as shown in the example below:

Placing a Graphic Along the Right Margin
Help text automatically wraps around the left side of the image as shown in the example below:
