Building Distributed
Applications
Using the Progress AppServer
Programming the Client Application
This chapter describes how to program 4GL procedures that execute in a Progress session that runs as a client to an AppServer. Specifically, the sections in this chapter describe:
- 4GL for programming AppServer client procedures
- Accessing AppServer resources from a client
- Connecting an AppServer instance
- Accessing the connection ID on the client
- Running and managing remote procedures
- Disconnecting an AppServer instance
- Managing Asynchronous Requests
- Handling conditions and return values
This chapter addresses programming issues specific to AppServer 4GL client procedures. It assumes that you are generally familiar with writing and executing Progress 4GL procedures. For more information on using the Progress 4GL, see the Progress Programming Handbook .
While there is some reference to Open Clients, for complete information on programming Java and ActiveX Controller Open Clients, see the Progress Open Client Developer’s Guide.
For information on programming issues specific to AppServer applications, see Programming the AppServer." For information common to programming both 4GL client and AppServer procedures, see Design and Implementation Considerations."
