Creating Incremental .df Files

You use the Progress/400 incremental file utility to compare two Progress/400 server schemas and create a .df file that contains any differences. You can then use the incremental .df file to upgrade from an existing DB2/400 database to the current DB2/400 database.

NOTE: You must have at least two DB2/400 Databases connected to create an incremental .df file. Your working database should be the database with the newest version of the database schema. Progress/400 creates the incremental .df file in a Progress format only, which might not preserve DB2/400 data types. See Table 9–4 for Progress-to-DB2/400 data type mapping.

Follow these steps to create an incremental file:

  1. Access the Progress/400 Data Dictionary.
  2. Choose Admin Dump Data & Definitions Create Incremental .df File. The following window appears:
  3. The Progress/400 Data Dictionary lists all connected DB2/400 databases except the working database.

  4. If you have more than two DB2/400 databases connected, select the database that you want to update to be a duplicate of your working database.
  5. When prompted, enter the name of the file to which the utility will write the differences. The default is DELTA.DF.
  6. Choose OK to perform the comparison. The file, field, and index names are displayed during the comparison.

Once the comparison is complete and the incremental .df file has been created, you can load the file using the Progress/400 Data Dictionary to apply the schema changes to an existing database. After you load the file, you must synchronize the schema holder. See the "Loading Data Definitions" and "Synchronizing the Client" sections, respectively, for details.
