Glossary

Accelerator Keys

Key combinations you press to select a menu item.

Application Database

A database containing application schema and perhaps some data. You must connect to the application databases when you compile the source code, whether or not you include translations.

Character Set

The set of characters you use to read and write a language.

Code Page

A mapping of characters and symbols to internal numeric values.

Compressed File

A file that contains compressed data. You usually compress a kit to send to the translator. Also known as a zip file because it has a .zip extension.

Custom Glossary Entry

A glossary entry that the translator adds to a kit.

Default Glossary Entry

A glossary entry provided by the project manager that contains a list of suggested pairings from which the translator can choose.

Filter

The 4GL code that the Translation Manager uses to determine the subset of text extracted from the source procedures to load into the project database. The first ten panels in the Filter Wizard let you specify include filters-filters that determine the 4GL text phrases you want to place in the project database for translation. The last two panels let you specify exclude filters-Progress keywords or words you specify that you do not want to translate.

Folder

The main interface component of the Translation Manager and Visual Translator tools.

4GL

See Progress 4GL.

Glossary

A list of the text-phrase pairings for two spoken languages, for example German and French. A kit usually includes two types of glossary entries: Default and Custom. The translator uses the pairings in the glossary to translate text phrases.

In-context Translation

Translates text phrases as you see them in the context of the user-interface of a procedure. Also known as screen-by-screen translation.

Folder Translation

Translates a single text phrase from a list of text phrases.

Kit

Contains a kit database, resource procedures, an environment (.ini) file, and image files. You create a kit for each target language. You create a language kit with the Translation Manager tool.

Kit Database

A Progress database that contains text phrases and a default glossary with recommended pairings.

Language Family

Consists of the languages that use the same character set.

Menu Bar

Contains menu options that allow you to perform various tasks.

Privileges

Permissions you assign to the translator.

Progress 4GL

The fourth-generation programming language in which source code procedures are written.

Project

See Project Database.

Project Database

The largest container unit in the Translation Manager tool. A database that contains the elements required to translate an entire software application into one or more spoken languages. It includes a list of source procedures, text phrases, glossaries, and one or more language kits.

Resource Procedures

Shells of the original source procedures that do not contain any functionality. For example, if you choose a delete button on a resource procedure, you will not delete anything. The translator uses the resource procedures to translate text phrases in the context of the user interface.

Source Language

The language in which the source procedure is written.

Source Procedures

The Progress 4GL application procedures that contain the text phrases to be translated.

Tab

The user-interface component that opens a tab folder. For example, you choose the Procedures tab to open the Procedures tab folder.

Target Language

The language into which the translator translates the source-code text phrases. The target language does not have to be a spoken language; it can be an alternate language of business or technical terms.

Text Phrase

One or more characters enclosed in quotes in a Progress 4GL application.

Text Segment Growth

The process of expanding source code text segment allocation at compile time so that translations can fit in their text segments without truncating. Text segment growth is important when you translate a compact language, such as English, into other less compact languages. For example, the English word “file” is shorter than the French translation “fichier.”

Toolbar

Contains buttons that provide quick access to some of the most commonly used menu options.

TRANMAN 2.0

See Translation Management System 2.0.

Translation Data

The resource procedures, text phrases, and user-interface objects to be translated.

Translation Management System 2.0

The Progress Version 9 Translation Management System (TRANMAN 2.0) consists of two tools-the Translation Manager and the Visual Translator.

Translation Manager

A Progress application tool that lets you manage the entire process of translating the text phrases in Progress applications. This tool works in partnership with the Progress Visual Translator tool.

Translation Project Manager

The person who oversees the entire process of translating a company’s software applications.

Translator

The person who uses the Visual Translator tool to translate text phrases in user-interface procedures.

Visual Translator

A Progress application tool that lets you translate text phrases from procedures into one or more spoken languages. This tool works in partnership with the Progress Translation Manager tool.
