Progress/400
Product Guide
Introduction
The Progress/400 product allows you to access information stored in DB2/400 database files by applications written in the Progress Fourth Generation Language (4GL). You can develop your applications within the Progress Application Development Environment (ADE). The ADE includes a set of graphical tools that helps you maintain databases and develop applications. In addition to providing you with the Progress Application Development Environment (ADE) tools, the product allows you to implement Progress database features and 4GL extensions in applications that run with the DB2/400 database. Some of these tools and features are:
- Progress/400 DataServer — Use the Progress/400 DataServer to access DB2/400 databases and other OS/400 objects.
- AppBuilder — Use the AppBuilder to design and generate code for your graphical user interfaces. For example, you can use the AppBuilder to create a browse widget for viewing DB2/400 data.
- Progress/400 Data Dictionary — Use the Progress/400 Data Dictionary to maintain DB2/400 data definitions.
- Native 4GL Client — Use the Native 4GL Client to run batch and report applications on the AS/400.
- Progress/400 AppServer — Use the AppServer to participate in distributed application computing.
This chapter presents an overview of the Progress/400 product. It describes how Progress applications and databases work together with the DB2/400 DBMS through the DataServer. Specifically, this chapter discusses product architecture and guidelines for using the product.
