Assigning Topic IDs

A topic ID is a unique character string that identifies each topic in a help system. The topic ID tells the help engine which topic to display when the user chooses a popup link, jump, or a user interface feature that has been assigned context-sensitive help.

A topic ID footnote may contain alphanumeric characters, the period, and the underscore. Other non-alphanumeric characters, such as parentheses, dashes, and spaces, are not allowed. One space separates the control code (#) and the topic ID footnote text:

Each help topic can be assigned only one topic ID. Although not mandatory, each help topic should be assigned a topic ID. A topic that is not assigned a topic ID can only be accessed by an index keyword search or as part of a browse sequence.
