Defining Field Length
When defining fields in tables using the Progress/400 Data Dictionary field properties panel, the size of the field is calculated from the format that you specify for the field when you add it. If the calculated size is larger than the AS/400 DDS maximum size, it is truncated to the maximum. See the AS/400 DDS Guide for maximum lengths of the various data types.
Once you commit field changes, the only way to change the field size is to delete the field and then add it again. If you change a field’s name, committing that change will fail. Again, you must delete the field and add it with the new name.
CAUTION: Whenever you delete a field, the data in the field is lost. Although you can successfully change a field’s name, data type, or size by deleting and then adding it, the data in the field is lost.
