Progress
Portability Guide
Name Length
Use a maximum filename length that takes into account your software platform (Windows or UNIX) and your file networking software. Although Windows and UNIX support long filenames, some file networking software does not. For maximum portability, use operating system filenames that have a maximum of eight characters (not including the extension).
Database table names can be from 1 to 32 characters; however, to ensure portability, make the first eight characters unique.
In Windows, if your Progress table names are more than eight characters and the first eight characters of some of the table names are the same, you might not be able to use the standard Data Dictionary dump/reload utilities. These procedures dump data to a text file whose name is the table name with a .d extension. These dump files might overwrite each other. The Data Dictionary generates an error message in this case.
Although you can override the default dump/reload name, avoid duplicate names. Avoid using procedure names that are longer than eight characters or that contain periods. A filename extension of .p or .w is recommended.
Windows lets you create bitmap (
.BMP
), icon (.ICO
), and cursor (.CUR
) files for your applications. Bitmap files define monochrome or color bitmaps. Icon and cursor files define a family of images. For maximum flexibility, omit file extensions when referencing an image file to allow Progress to search for a file with the appropriate file extension. Progress first searches the current working directory and then searches the PROPATH for matching filenames and extensions that a platform supports. Windows searches in this order:.BMP
,.ICO
,.CUR
. For more information on images, see User Interface Design."
