AdminServer Security

Progress Version 9.1D has enhanced functionality that provides administrators with the opportunity to establish more security when it comes to working with the AdminServer. A feature of the AdminServer security enhancement is that a username and password can now be required for starting the AppServer, Sonic Adapter, and WebSpeed. The difference in behavior in Progress Version 9.1D and prior versions regarding the require username option for starting the AppServer, WebSpeed, and Sonic Adapter is documented in the following sections:

Require Username and Password On Windows

On the Windows platform in versions earlier than Progress Version 9.1D, the username is optional to start the servers, but if you provide a username, you also have to provide a password. Progress verifies that the username and password are valid through authentication. In Progress Version 9.1D, the username and password are still optional by default, but you can now require a username and password using the Progress Explorer or the command-line option Require Username (-requireusername). Additionally, blank passwords are now supported.

For additional information on how to require username and password, see:

Manual:
"Administration" in this bulletin.

Require Username and Password On Unix

On the UNIX platform in versions earlier than Progress Version 9.1D, the username is optional, the password is never required, and Progress never authenticates the starting of the servers. In Progress Version 9.1D, the default username is still optional, but if you supply a username, a password is now required. Additionally, you can require a username and password using the Progress Explorer or with the command-line option Require Username (-requireusername). If you require the username and password, Progress Version 9.1D on UNIX now verifies that the username and password are valid through authentication. Additionally, blank passwords are now supported.

For additional information on how to require username and password, see:

Manual:
"Administration" in this bulletin.
