Starting a Server For the Database
Both the AppBuilder and a WebSpeed Agent must be connected to the Sports2000 database before you can run sample applications or begin the tutorial in Creating a WebSpeed Application." Since the AppBuilder and the WebSpeed Agent function as individual users of the database, the database must be started in multi-user mode. To start a database in multi-user mode, you must start a server for the database.
Before you begin, you should make a copy of the Sports2000 database. The procedure is described in the "Making a Working Copy Of the Sports2000 Database" section.
The following steps show how to use Progress Explorer to start a server for the Sports2000 database. Progress Explorer is an administrative utility that runs on Windows platforms. For more information about Progress Explorer, see the Progress Installation and Configuration Guide Version 9 for Windows .
NOTE: You can also use the PROSERVE command to start a server for the database. For more information about PROSERVE, see the Progress Startup Command and Parameter Reference .
- Make sure that an AdminServer is running on the system where you want to start a database server for your working copy of the Sports2000 database.
An AdminServer is installed on every system where you installed a Progress database, AppServer, NameServer, or WebSpeed Transaction Server.
Under the default configuration on Windows NT-based systems, the AdminServer starts automatically and runs as an NT service. You can start and stop the AdminServer from the Services control in the Windows Control Panel. For more information about running the AdminServer, see the Progress Installation and Configuration Guide Version 9 for Windows . For information on running an AdminServer on UNIX systems, see the Progress Installation and Configuration Guide Version 9 for UNIX .
NOTE: You might have to verify that a NameServer is also running. However, if you use the default configuration to start the AdminServer, the NameServer will be started automatically.- Choose Start
