Progress/400
Product Guide

Preface

Purpose

This manual explains how to use the Progress/400 products that include the Progress/400 DataServer, the Native 4GL Client, and the Progress/400 AppServer. This manual discusses database design and programming issues to consider when creating applications that access the Progress and DB2/400 database management systems. Additionally, it describes the client and server utilities that support the Progress/400 products. Note that this manual is intended specifically for Version 9.1 and later of the Progress/400 Product.

Throughout this document, DB2/400 refers to any database on the AS/400 that was created or is maintained using DDS, IDDU, or SQL/400. Progress Software Corporation uses this name to be consistent with IBM documentation.

If you are a Progress/400 customer, use this manual and the standard Progress (MS-Windows, OS/2, and UNIX) documentation set for your specific Progress needs.

Progress Messages

Progress displays several types of messages to inform you of routine and unusual occurrences:

After displaying a message, Progress proceeds in one of several ways:

Progress messages end with a message number in parentheses. In this example, the message number is 200:

** Unknown table name table. (200)

Use Progress online help to get more information about Progress messages. On the Windows platform, many Progress tools include the following Help menu options to provide information about messages:

On the UNIX platform, you can use the Progress PRO command to start a single-user mode character Progress client session and view a brief description of a message by providing its number. Follow these steps:

  1. Start the Progress Procedure Editor:
  2. install-dir/dlc/bin/pro

  3. Press F3 to access the menu bar, then choose Help Messages.
  4. Type the message number, and press ENTER. Details about that message number appear.
