Progress/400 AppServer Instance Environment

Depending on what you select in the Progress/400 AppServer Defaults field during installation or using the CHGPRODFT utility, you can allow for complete Progress/400 control over the jobs and resources or complete user control. There are certain factors to consider when deciding the method to use for your particular application.

It is important to consider the size of the AS/400 machine before choosing a subsystem method for your application’s use. The more subsystems your application starts, the more memory your machine will need. The different subsystem methods will also affect performance.

The choice of the *ADMSVR method gives Progress/400 complete control over where the jobs run. With this selection, all of the jobs run in the one subsystem specified by the user at install time. Progress/400 manages this subsystem and all jobs started within it.

The choice of the *BROKER method causes Progress/400 to use more resources as it creates a subsystem for each AppServer instance started. This method allows the user to tune each subsystem to individual specifications.

The choice of the *USER method gives the user complete control over where the jobs run and what resources are allocated to the subsystem specified.
