Testing Your Network With the ping Command
To have your Web server work, you must have a properly functioning network. Your Web server has to be connected to a network to receive requests from clients on other machines. You can test your network with the ping command. The ping command is available on any machine that is connected to a network using the TCP/IP protocol. It sends TCP/IP test packets to the computer you specify and verifies the packets it receives in reply.
When you use the ping command, send the first ping to “localhost.” This verifies that your local network connection is working properly. After checking that your local network connection is working, you can use the ping command to verify that remote machines are connected to your network.
You can find the specifics for using the ping command on your system through the Help system of your Windows machine or through the man page for the ping command on your UNIX machine.
