Getting Started
with WebSpeed
Preface
Purpose
This book introduces you to the WebSpeed Workshop Environment, which is a suite of components and tools for creating Internet Transaction Processing (ITP) applications. It contains a brief description of the WebSpeed components and tools. It shows you how to set up WebSpeed to develop ITP applications. Finally, this book contains a tutorial that shows you how to use WebSpeed to create an ITP application.

How To Use This Manual
The information presented in this guide has been tailored to allow you to set up WebSpeed and complete the tutorial in Chapter 5 in less than half a day. However, you can complete as much of the tutorial as you want in any one session. To gain the most from the tutorial, complete the step-by-step instructions in Chapter 3 and in Chapter 5 in order.
Before you can run the sample applications or complete the tutorial, you must do a complete installation of WebSpeed Workshop or Progress ProVision Plus. For installation information, see the WebSpeed Installation and Configuration Guide .

ESCAPE CURSOR-LEFTWebSpeed Messages
WebSpeed displays several types of messages to inform you of routine and unusual occurrences:
- Execution messages inform you of errors encountered while WebSpeed is running a procedure (for example, if it cannot find a record with a specified index field value).
- Compile messages inform you of errors found while WebSpeed is reading and analyzing a procedure prior to running it (for example, if a procedure references a table name that is not defined in the database).
- Startup messages inform you of unusual conditions detected while WebSpeed is getting ready to execute (for example, if you entered an invalid startup parameter).
WebSpeed messages end with a message number in parentheses. In this example, the message number is 200:
Use the WebTools Message tool to see more information about WebSpeed messages. In addition, the online help for many Progress tools includes the following Help menu options:
- Choose Help
Recent Messages to display detailed descriptions of the most recent WebSpeed message and all other messages returned in the current session.
- Choose Help
Messages, then enter the message number to display a description of any WebSpeed message. (If you encounter an error that terminates WebSpeed, make a note of the message number before restarting.)
