WebSpeed
Installation and
Configuration Guide
Preinstallation Tasks
After you have planned your WebSpeed installation, complete the preinstallation tasks described in Table 4–5 before starting your WebSpeed installation.
Table 4–5: Preinstallation Tasks Task Description Read Read the hard-copy Release Notes . The Release Notes might replace or supplement the installation instructions in this guide. Shut down On Windows systems, shut down any nonessential applications or tasks that might be running, such as virus protection packages. Other applications or tasks might interfere with the installation or use files that Progress needs to complete the installation.Shut down any processes where the executable itself, or a file used by the executable, is located in the directory where you intend to install WebSpeed. Preinstall Install a Web Server product and configure a Web Server directory on a machine where you want these products to reside.Install a Web browser on machines where you plan to install an AppBuilder.Install any required Java components. See the "Java Requirements" section of "Installation Requirements," for detailed information. Check Check that you have enough system resources for the installation and that all environment variables have been properly set.On UNIX, make sure that the ULIMIT on your system is set to at least 8MB. For specific instructions on setting the ULIMIT, consult its man page. Delete
(NT only) If you have a previous version of WebSpeed and the PROMSGS environment variable is set in the Control Panel on Windows NT, you must delete the PROMSGS environment variable before installing WebSpeed. If PROMSGS points to an old or nonexistent PROMSGS file, the InstallShield Utility will not write all the necessary data to the Windows registry. Copy If you have an existing WebSpeed installation, make a copy of the Document Root directory and the Scripts directory before you install this new version of WebSpeed. The new installation overwrites the WebSpeed files in these directories. The working directory is unchanged when you install a new version of WebSpeed. It is possible, however, that the WebSpeed log files might be overwritten. Convert If you are upgrading a Version 8.x Progress database, truncate the before-image (.bi) file using the PROUTIL TRUNCATE BI utility and back up your Version 8.x Progress database using the PROBKUP utility. For more information on converting databases, see the “Creating and Deleting Databases” chapter in the Progress Database Administration Guide and Reference . Note Note the following information about your Web server:
- Web server API type—ISAPI, NSAPI, or CGI. Your Web server can be running on any platform.
- Web server Document Root directory—You can choose to have the setup program install the HTML static files for WebSpeed in this directory, if you install your Transaction Server on the same machine as your Web server.
- Web server scripts path—This depends on whether your Web server is on a Windows NT machine or a UNIX machine:
- For a Windows NT server, the setup program installs the CGI and ISAPI Messenger executables into the scripts directory of your Web server. It installs the NSAPI Messenger executable into the install-path
\bin
directory.- For a UNIX server, the installation utility installs the CGI Messenger script into the directory that your Web server uses to locate scripts and executables. It installs the NSAPI and CGI Messenger executables into the install-path
/bin
directory.CAUTION: The WebSpeed Development Server and WebSpeed Workshop products include the Progress Version 9 Personal Database. If you are using Progress Version 8 single-volume databases, you must convert your Version 8 databases to a multi-volume structure before converting the databases to Version 9. (Note that you must truncate your before-image file in Version 8 before converting to Version 9.) If you plan to replace Progress Version 8 files with Version 9 files, complete this step before installing WebSpeed and avoid erasing your Progress Version 8 files.
