Adjusting the SQL Width Property Setting

The SQL Field Width property allows the 4GL client to modify the field width so that the SQL-92 client will have the proper size to work with. If you do not adjust the setting, the SQL-92 client uses the default width property.

To adjust the field width in GUI mode, make sure you are connected to a database and then follow these steps:

  1. From the Windows Desktop, choose Start Programs Progress Data Dictionary. The Data Dictionary appears.
  2. Select a table.
  3. Choose Options SQL Properties Adjust Field Width from the menu bar. Progress displays the Adjust Field Width dialog box.
  4. Select the name of the field whose width you want to adjust, click its width setting, and make the adjustment.
  5. Repeat Step 4 for any other fields.
  6. Choose Save, and then choose OK.

To adjust the field width in character mode, make sure you are connected to a database and follow these steps:

  1. Access the Data Dictionary.
  2. Choose Schema SQL Properties. A table name appears in the Table Name field, which is followed by a list of additional table names.
  3. Choose the table you want; the name automatically appears in the Table Name field.
  4. Press ENTER to open the table. The width of the first field in the field name listing is highlighted.
  5. Select the name of the field whose width you want to adjust, click its width setting, and make the adjustment.
  6. Repeat Step 5 for any other fields.
  7. Choose Save, then press ENTER.
  8. Press F4, then choose Apply Changes.
